Shoppers Win Compensation for False Imprisonment

A 54-year-old supermarket shopper from Rathfarnham, Co Dublin and her niece have been awarded €20,000 in damages each for false imprisonment and defamation of character after they were stopped and detained by members of a G4S security team operating on behalf of Dunnes Stores.
The incident which occurred in September 2007 saw the pair searched in full public view, brought back into the Dunnes Stores store, and spoken to by Gardai. After the Gardai had confirmed that all of the items in the pairs’ bags had been paid for, they were allowed to leave.
The security guards defended themselves by sawing that they were only adhering to Dunnes Stores’ policy.
